Questions:
1. Do you believe an electronic strike zone would be beneficial or non-beneficial to the game of baseball?
2. Would the removal of traditional umpires take away from the tradition of baseball?
3. Do you think all sports should take advantage new technology to fairly umpire or referee games, even if it slowed down the game?
I do not think an electronic strike zone would be beneficial to the game of baseball. Umpires have been used for the entirety of the history of baseball, and for other sports as well. Just because a bad call on a pitch is made should not raise just cause for ending a long-standing tradition. In many cases, instant replays have ruined the excitement of human judgement, and having an electric strike zone would do the same as well. Other sports leagues should not follow suit in raising questions, as umpires and referees have more knowledge and a better though-process than a computer. I think umpires should stay and should never be removed from baseball.
ReplyDeleteI do not believe an electronic strike zone would be beneficial to the game of baseball. It takes the decision away from the umpire out of the game. This will lead to a decrease in jobs because umpires will no longer be necessary in the game of baseball. Umpires have been around since the beginning of the game, so taking them away would ruin the tradition and history of the game. I feel that all sports should take advantage of new technology to fairly umpire or referee games, even if it slowed down the game. Umpires have a better process of calling strikes than a computer can. If it does not deter from the tradition of the game, I feel that any new technology can be beneficial to the game.

ReplyDeleteThe addition of an electronic strike zone would not be a smart decision when consider all the fans who have watched the sport their entire lives. Umpires play a huge role in todays game, and while they can be frustrating at times, there is little reason the complete elimination of them would be positive to the sport. Certainly the game would be faster, and the calls would be more accurate, but the tradition of having umpires would be tarnished. Many old fans, along with new ones, would feel betrayed by this decision to add electronic strike zones. There are no safeguards when talking about the strike zone, but it adds to the strategy of the teams, who are trying to invent new ways to get the batters out. In addition to not adding electronic strike zones, there should not be any new unveiling of a electronic form of umpiring. The safe guard to preventing wrong calls from umpires are clearly available, with review, and with these options there should not be any dramatic changes, which can spark outrage from many fans. I think baseball is doing a pretty good job at taking advantage of new technology, by using review, however they should improve at the speed they review it. If they are not able to realize a clear call within a certain amount of time, in any sport, they should uphold the call. In every sport today there are officials who run the game, even though they can easily install new modern forms of officiating, but fans love the aspect of having officials. The same approach should remain in place for baseball.
I do not believe that an electronic strike zone would be beneficial to the game of baseball because umpires have been dedicated to the game, and have learned it inside and out, especially at the professional level. Putting an electronic strike zone would put many umpires out of employment and take away from the beauty of tradition that comes with the game of baseball. Umpires have been a huge part of the game ever since it started. They keep the game entertaining and competitive. When umpires make bad calls, it motivates players to go 100% to make up for it. I do not think sports should take advantage of new technology even if it means speeding up the game because refs & umpires create a great competitive environment for all athletes.
ReplyDeleteI think an electric strike zone would be beneficial to the sport of baseball because it would allow for more fair assessments of pitches, but I don't think it should be implemented. While this is true, it would also take away from the tradition of the game. The umpires make certain calls which allows the pitcher leeway and adds to the strategy of the game. It is also more exciting to see what the umpire calls and adds to the emotion of the fans. I think there is something to be said for technology and its usefulness in sports but if it takes away from the origins of the sports it shouldn't be implemented.
ReplyDeleteI say that an electric strike zone would not be a good addition to the game. The umpires have played such a big role in the sport, and they have devoted so much time to learning the rules of the game. I do not think it would be fair to them if their jobs were taken away because of computers. The human element of the game is very important, and everyone makes mistakes, so it is not fair to replace umps just because of the few mistakes that they have made. The removal of umpires would take away from the tradition of the game. They have played such a big role in the game, and baseball would not be the same without them. It would be weird to go to see a game, and not see someone calling strikes and balls behind the plate. I believe that sports leagues should use new technology, but only if it did not slow down the game. People already complain that baseball is too long, and the umpire reviews certainly do not speed it up. But, I do think it is worth it if enables them to get the calls right. There are some key plays where technology is needed to help to get it right, and there are sometimes it is used and not needed. There needs to be a fine line as to when the technology is needed, and when it is not needed.
ReplyDeleteI do not believe an electronic strike zone would be beneficial in baseball. Although it might be more accurate, it’s completely changing the game. Umpires have always been a part of baseball and to change that could lead to many issues such as upset fans, unemployment, etc. I do not think all sports should take advantage of new technology because it defeats the purpose of the game. Although some sports have changed over the decades, I do not think making this change is the right move. Especially if it slows down the game because baseball is already pretty slow.
ReplyDeleteIf electronic strike-zone were to be introduced into the historical game of baseball I think there would be many pros as well as cons. The obvious pro is that there would be little to no error on the call of any given pitch. A more advanced pro would be that there would be less arguments. It is often that a coach may argue with the ref over a controversial call. If a electronic strike zone was implemented, the coach would have no one to argue with. In short, it would make the game more smooth. On the down side, electronic strike-zones would take away from the tradition of the game. For as long as I know, umpires have been a important and iconic part to the game of baseball. If they were to be removed it would be a big change in the game, and some may not appreciate it. Lastly, I think that all sports should use new technology to help the game become more fair. However, I do not mean they should fully replace officials. I believe this because there are certain calls and rules that demand the presence of a referee. For example, in basketball if someone was to get a technical foul...only another person would be able to recognize this and penalize them.
ReplyDeleteI think an electronic strike zone would be beneficial for the game of baseball for many reasons. Reason one being, it completely gets rid of any more bad calls. Also, it creates a consistent strike zone, so pitches and batter no longer have to figure out an umpire strike zone. It will also eliminate arguments on balls and strikes, along with increasing the pace of play. I don't think the MLB would remove the traditional home plate umpire, because you still need someone to inform the players if the pitch is a ball or a strike. The umpires will know if the pitch is a ball or a strike through a headset. Lastly, I do think every sport should take advantage of new technology to better referee the game.
ReplyDeleteI believe that this is a two-sided argument in terms of the facts that it can be positive and negative. I believe the positive side of things include factors such as decrease of outbursts, no controversy in calls (could go either way), and the fact that players have equal opportunity when they step up to the mound. As said in the article, these outbursts players have can lead to serious damage, such as Michael Morse ending up on the disabled list. I think if there were an electric strike zone, this call would have been different, therefore not allowing Michael Morse to have the fate that he did. These players have no one to argue with and no one to dispute the call made at the plate with, but I believe if the technology is inaccurate, it will increase frustration. On the contrary to the positive beliefs, I believe taking away some of the controversial calls will increase the tediousness of the game as well as there will be nothing to fight over, which some people enjoy getting involved with. As well as these positive and negative things, it will remove jobs that humans would have and replace it with technology, in the direction that the world does not want to move in. I believe this is a crucial stance because of the fact that they may not have any other means of making money, so if they are stripped of their jobs, these umps could potentially be left without hope. I believe referees have tough jobs, and some are seen differently than others. However, that sometimes makes the beauty of sports. These controversies called by refs are some of the most influential moments in sports history. I think there can certainly be additions of new technology, but I believe it is unjust to have technology replace some of the jobs people would normally have.
ReplyDeleteI don't think an electronic strike zone would be beneficial to the game of baseball because the umpires make the game exciting. Umpires have been in the game ever since baseball was invented, and no one wants to see that tradition go away. Without umpires baseball wouldn't have the same atmosphere as it does now. Awaiting the refs call in any sport, is one of the greatest things sports has to offer. It puts you on edge and it attracts more viewers because it's exciting. Also, getting an electronic strike zone would potentially make these umpires unemployed which is unfair to the umpires. I think it would be fair to use new technology only for instant replays and challenges from coaches. For example, in the NFL, coaches have a certain number of challenges a game and they could use them if the coaches don't agree with the call. Challenges make the game more exciting in any sport.
ReplyDeleteI do not think that an electric strike zone would be beneficial to the game of baseball. Umpires and their split second judgements are a huge part of the game of baseball and taking away or limiting the power these umps have would not do any good for the game. Taking away umpires from the game would completely take away from the tradition of the game. These umps have been part of baseball since the beginning of the sport and getting rid of them would completely change and negatively affect the sport. I do think all sports should take advantage of new technologies without changing any traditions that have been part of the sport for the entirety of its existence.
ReplyDelete1. Do you believe an electronic strike zone would be beneficial or non-beneficial to the game of baseball?
ReplyDeleteI think it would be beneficial, in terms of taking away human error, but at the same time i think it would take away from the classic arguments about the call ect.
2. Would the removal of traditional umpires take away from the tradition of baseball?
I think it would take away from the game, its one of those things where everyone loves and loves to hate when the refs make a call and it makes the game and the post game a lot more intresting when everyone is arguing over that type of thing.
3. Do you think all sports should take advantage new technology to fairly umpire or referee games, even if it slowed down the game?
if it slows down the game full bail, but yes i think new tec will be used and i think thats a good thing, but i dont like the electronic strike zone cuz it takes away too much of the fun part of the game away.
I believe that the electronic strike zone would not be a good idea for the mlb or baseball in general because it would change the tradition of the game. The umpires have been a part of baseball for as long as the game has been a thing. even though the calls aren't always accurate, an electronic strike zone would make the game less real and I think it would lose the magic of the game.
ReplyDeleteI think that an electronic strike zone would be helpful to the game of baseball but not for every play. For instance in football the calls are made by refs but if there is a hard call to make or a questionable call the coach is able to challenge the call. I think that implementing such a system would be beneficial with each team having a certain number of challenges. I do think that if there was a removal of umpires in baseball would be taking away from the tradition of baseball. The umps have been a part of baseball since its creation and removing them would be going against the game. I think that all sports should use technology to help with close calls or give the ability of the coaches to challenge the call but the removal of refs/umpires with technology is not the right decision.
ReplyDeleteI do not believe that electronic strike zones would be beneficial to the game of baseball, because both the electric strike zone and the umpire would say the same thing, and it's very rare too see an umpire mess up a call. On another note the electric strike zone might get hacked/taken over by someone who has bet a lot of money on the game. Umpires have been in the game for as long as the game first became a major sport, so of course it would be taking something away from baseball traditions. I believe sports should take advantage of new technology, however I do not agree that they should get rid of the umpires for it. If they do that then it's not baseball anymore.
ReplyDeleteI think an electric strike zone is beneficial to baseball as it helps speed up the game and allow more fair calls on pitches. On the other hand, the technology would take away from the traditions of baseball. Baseball is supposed to have controversial calls just like any other sport. The calls of the umpire determine the outcome of each pitch, not a machine. The different calls, whether they are controversial or not add to the suspense of the game and viewer enjoyment. Yes, technology would speed up the game but it would take away the originality of it. Electric strike zones would be good for practice to give pitchers an idea of consistency of their pitches.

ReplyDeleteI think that the electronic strike zone would be less beneficial to the game but could be used during practice for the pitchers. I think that during practice could be beneficial for the pitchers to see what zones the ball needs to be in. During a game I think that umpire should make the call during the game because the game does change on the calls of the umpires. I agree with Kate that technology would speed up the game but would take away from the originality of the it.
ReplyDeleteI think that an electronic strike zone would be beneficiary to the game of ball. Today, I think that one of the major issues in baseball is the inconsistency of calls. I think that by adding this advanced technology to baseball, it will definitely decrease the amount of dispute. If traditional umpires are to be removed, I think that the tradition of baseball would be taken away. Part of what makes baseball so interesting is the amount of dispute following a controversial call. I think that an advanced piece of technology, like this strike zone, should only be placed in baseball. I do not think that it should be added in a complex sport like football or basketball because it would be too hard to monitor. Not to mention, it would significantly slow down the play of games. This would further hurt the tradition of baseball.
ReplyDeletei do not believe electric strike zones would be beneficial to the sport of baseball. Good old fashion baseball has been Americas pastime for more then a hundred years. Throughout those years there has never been anyone other then the umpire making the calls on the diamond. With electric strike zones there would be nothing to argue about. Controversy is one of things that makes baseball bearable to watch in my opinion and if they got rid of all the controversy it would be a boring game and that goes for any sport
ReplyDeleteI do believe electronic strike zones would be beneficial to baseball. One of the biggest problems in todays game is the strike zone and how it varies. Too many times you see hitters arguing calls that they thought were balls. The use of the electronic strike zone would cancel out all of the arguing. Arguing takes up un needed time in baseball and pace of play is one of major league baseballs biggest issue. If there was an electronic strike zone then error would be cancelled out and baseball would be much faster which would lead to a better game
ReplyDeleteI believe that electronic strike zones may be beneficial in baseball in terms of getting the calls right, that being said, it takes away from the tradition of the game greatly. Bad calls and arguments are all part of the game that would be taken away with the use of an electronic zone. I don't believe that other sports should use electronic rulings either being that like baseball, refs are part of the game as well.
