1. Do you think stricter rules should be enforced to reduce tanking in the NBA? 2. Can tanking to strengthen a sports team be considered a form of cheating?
3. Do you think tanking will become common in other professional sports?
I do not believe there should be stricter rules on tanking. I think it can be a good strategy to have a successful team in the future as well as for planning. It could also improve players who may not see the floor as much as others. I do not think tanking should be encouraged because it allows for teams to purposefully fail but grow at the same time. However, I do think it is a good strategy to build a team around, especially if they know what they need on the floor. I do not necessarily believe it could be called cheating because some teams really do need star players that are young and up-and-coming. It is a way for teams to build around future players and try to win some games, which you can not blame them for trying to do. I think it could be common in other sports because it is a well-known strategy for multiple teams, so I believe it could expand to places beyond basketball.
No I don't think that there should be stricter rules to reduce the tanking in NBA. The teams doing this type of thinking have good ideas because they are doing what is best for their team and how they can go further. Tanking is a way for a team to get a better seeding and I don't think it is a form of cheating. Tanking is a way to manipulate the system in favor for themselves. I think that if tanking becomes more popular than it will become more common in other professional sports. Once sports will understand the benefits of tanking and how they can get themselves to a better seed and help their record.
I do not think that there should be stricter rules on tanking because every team can do what they need to do to eventually win. If you look at the 76ers, they tanked for a couple of years, and now they are in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Tanking is just part of the process to improve your team. No, tanking to improve a sports team should not be considered cheating because they are not doing anything bad, they are just doing what they think is best for the team. I think that tanking is common in other sports such as football because if the team has nothing to play for, they try to get a better pick in order to draft a player that can help turn the franchise around.
Stricter rules should be put in place because tanking takes away from the competitiveness and nature of the sport. Teams blowing games make it uninteresting for the fans and questionable in regards to morals. A teams record should be a true determinator of the teams skill not their strategy to earn a higher lottery pick. I think it is considered a form of cheating because it doesn't give help to the teams that truly need it the most. I think there should be a penalty to those who purposely tank including not giving them the benefits of having a worse record. I think tanking is pretty common with professional teams because of the benefits they receive and I think there should be a system in place to stop these kind of actions.
I think stricter rules should be enforced to reduce tanking in the NBA because tanking takes away from the way teams play the game. Teams losing on purpose doesn’t make the crowd interested and will eventually lead to a loss in profit. It also makes the fans question the morals of their favorite players. I feel that tanking to strengthen a sports team can be considered a form of cheating because it does not allow the teams who actually need the help to get it. There should be a punishment of some sort for the teams who use tanking as a strategy and don’t need it. I think that tanking is currently common in other professional sports. However, the teams who do not need to use tanking as a strategy and do, should be penalized.
No, in this case, tanking is a fair routine in the NBA. The draft lottery process already denies the guarantee of having the first pick if the team ends up in last place for the previous season. However, other leagues such as the NFL that have a major emphasis on the college draft, should make strides in ending "tanking". The Cleveland Browns may or may not have tried to lose every game this season, but coming in last place should not guarantee the first pick in the draft. This disrupts the entirety of the league and benefits other teams playing tanking franchises. Tanking should not be considered a form of cheating, as no illegal action occurs in the process. Teams should be encouraged though to continue to try during the entire season.
There is no definite way to determine without a doubt that a team is purposely losing. This part of a sport can be at times inevitable, after certain players age as years go by. This forces a team to adjust to the new reality, that they have to go into a rebuilding mode. If there is evidence of a team putting in less effort in an effort to gain a advantage for next year, yes actions should be taken, but I feel that players of a team would not give up. If the evidence is obvious of a team showing a nonchalant effort on the court is true, this still shouldn’t be called cheating. It is a bad move for the character of the franchise, but it is not breaking any formal rule. There is no question that this poses a bad image for a franchise, but if the NBA or any other sport for that matter wants to change the rules of who gets the best pick, they can take that action. The action of tanking is not one that is popular at all. The saying that a franchise is in a “rebuilding” stage has become a popular one though. The 76ers, a rapidly growing franchise from past years, is one of the best examples of what rebuilding can do. After being plagued year after year with being one of the worst teams, they used the draft to build a nucleus of players inside their team. Now they are one of the most successful teams in the NBA. Starting this year, the NBA commissioner Adam Silver has introduced a new format into the NBA draft lottery, making it less likely for the worst team from gaining the best pick. This action can be considered a response for any skeptical people who questioned teams tactics in losing games purposely to winover the best players in a draft.
I do not feel that stricter rules should be enforced in the NBA to reduce tanking. I feel that tanking is part of the sport and is a technique that teams do to attempt to have more successful seasons in the near future. I do not feel that tanking to strengthen a sports team should be considered a form a cheating because they are using a specific technique to strengthen the team in upcoming years/seasons. Tanking is just a way for sports teams to get a better team for seasons to come rather than wasting the remaining time in their current season. I do not feel that tanking will become popular in other sports because if other sports teams wanted to use this technique in other sports, it would already have been done. Tanking is not a new thing in the NBA and I feel that it is not the culture of other sports teams to "tank" for a better draft pick.
I do not feel strict rules should be enforced that prevent tanking. This is because the ultimate goal for any team is to win a championship. Everything a team does is done for a reason, and as teams tank it is to help them in the future. Tanking, in any way, should not be considered cheating. It is simply a strategy. It should not be considered cheating because it is not guaranteed that it will help them. It is a gamble. And if teams decide they want to take a risk...they should be allowed. I do not think tanking will become common in other sports because basketball is really the only sport in which a young college player can really effect a teams play. This is because in football, there are 50-60 guys on a roster, and people can easily be replaced. In basketball, roster spots are more limited and important.
i think tanking a season is last resort for many teams. Tanking requires the buy in of an entire organization and its fanbase. It does seem like cheating when tanking means that the team with the very worst record will receive the highest pick in the draft, however the lottery does seem to even out this problem. Additionally, a problem with tanking includes teams adopting the all or nothing mindset, where they are either trying to win it all, or just trying to lose as many games as possible. This seems to creating a poor competitive atmosphere in the NBA however, until rule changes occur we will continue to see teams that are either all in or all out.
In other sports I think tanking is not as prevalent because the NBA is really the only sport where one player can make a significant impact. Additionally certain sports markets in big cities will not be permitted to tank due to the demand of the fanbase. i.e. new york and the yankees.
I do not think that stricter rules should be enforced to reduce tanking. I think this because tanking is a strategy that many teams in the NBA use, so getting rid of tanking would take away a big part of the game. I don't think tanking can strengthen a teams consideration for cheating because I think tanking is looked at as more of a strategy, rather than a plot for cheating. I don't think tanking will become popular amongst other sports because it is linked to the NBA, and I do not think other sports would find it appealing.
I think that tanking rules should not be enforced. I believe that tanking isn't cheating, but it is a strategy. It shows that they are trying to build their team for the long run. I also think that tanking is kind of cowardly. I think that it is exciting when a mediocre team does well. I think th teams should be able to do whatever they want. At the end of the day they are just losing games.
1. Do you think stricter rules should be enforced to reduce tanking in the NBA? Eh, i think if you wanna suck on purpose you should be allowed to because it only hurts yourself, since fans and the players won't like that and will no longer want to play for your team and cheer for it.
2. Can tanking to strengthen a sports team be considered a form of cheating? Not really since everyone can do it and it takes no skill to do, you just throw your starts and starters on IR.
3. Do you think tanking will become common in other professional sports? I think its already common practice to tank if you suck, people generally try like the first half of the season, then when they dont win they just try to not win.
In my opinion, I believe that they shouldn't in list stricter rules in an effort to reduce tanking. I think this because tanking is more of a strategy for teams than anything else, and if you take away their strategy then would fall (in rank) quite a bit. I believe everybody is open to their own opinion, but at I think it isn't a form of cheating. Like I said before it's more like a strategy, because there aren't any rules to keep teams from doing it. Although it's not considered cheating, I believe that it won't catch on to other sports, mainly because other sports won't find it so nice, other than the NBA
I do not think stricter rules should be enforced to prevent tanking. In the modern day NBA, tanking is an intelligent strategy to compete in the years to come. Take the examples of the Dallas Mavericks and The Philadelphia 76ers. Philly is currently in the second round of the NBA playoffs and will be a powerhouse for years to come. The Dallas Mavericks tanked and drafted Dennis Smith Jr., a rookie of the year candidate and are in position to draft a top player once again in the top 3 of the 2018 draft. I don’t see why it would make sense to punish teams for making a smart rebuilding move rather than suffer in mediocrity, like the Charlotte Hornets, hoping to compete. I touched on this slightly in the paragraph prior but I do not believe it should be considered a form of cheating. It is a tactical decision like many other tactical decisions and it is not currently outlawed in the league. If there was a rule against it, I understand why it would be cheating but currently I simply think it is a smart decision. I do not think tanking will become more common in other sports. In the NBA, once great player can take you from terrible to a contender. However in Baseball or Football, it is more a team game that requires many players to make an impact.
Yes, I think there should be stricter rules when it comes to tanking in the NBA. I think it takes away from the competitiveness in the league. I also takes away from the fans interest in the team. Even though I don't think its not good for the game, I don't think think tanking is cheating. I don't think it cheating because these teams are also hurting them selfs when they tank, and they are also taking a risk on hoping their draft pick will help their team. Yes, I believe tanking will become common in other professional sports because it has proven to be a pretty good tactic to rebuild a franchise.
I think the stricter rules should be enforced to reduce tanking in the NBA because I think tanking can ruin a sports team. Tanking makes a team look weak in my opinion and it can ruin the fan base of an entire organization. I think it's a form of cheating because it's an easy way to get a good draft pick and it's unfair for the good teams that put in the effort to win a championship. In my opinion, I think tanking is just another name for cheating and it has no place in sports. I think it will become common because it's a good strategy to get good players and as long as the NBA doesn't do anything serious about it, teams will do it more often.
I do not think stricter rules should be enforced to help combat against teams intentionally losing. I think that if you are willing to forfeit a season in order to get one good draft pick, that is a choice that a team should be allowed to make. Contrary to Timmy, I think that high draft picks can also strengthen a fan base like we saw in Philadelphia when the "Trust the Process" movement was started by the 76ers. I don't necessarily think it is a form of cheating, because on the simplest level, its just losing. I don't think it will become more or less common, I think it is a thing we see with certain teams usually when they have been eliminated from playoff contention.
I do think that stricter rules should be enforced to reduce tanking in the NBA. I feel that tanking contributes to the negative culture of the NBA. Tanking reduces the amount of competition in the NBA, and i do not think that should tolerated. This also ruins the image that the NBA promotes, which is the idea that hard work leads to success. I think that tanking is a perfect example of cheating. Doing something that is prohibited to help the chances of the team is definitely cheating. I do not think that tanking will become common in other professional sports. In a sport like basketball, where there are minimal players on a team, I think that tanking is a more common thing to do. In a sport like football, where there are numerous players on a team, I think that tanking would negatively hurt the future success of that team.
Do you think stricter rules should be enforced to reduce tanking in the NBA? I do believe stricter rules should be enforced since mainly half the league tanks to get a better draft pick. I think the league should change its format to make the consequence for doing badly more of greater punishment. Take the premier league for example and how the bottom three teams get relegated into a lower division. If the NBA had that rule then teams wouldn't tank and the teams from the NBA D league would get the top three picks in the draft which would make the league much more fair.
I don't think the NBA should implement rules to reduce tanking in the NBA. I understand how it can be seen as unfair to intentionally lose your games to get a higher draft pick but then bad teams would never get better. They would add small players every year which would make no difference to the level of their team. I do not think tanking can be considered a form of cheating. I think tanking will be common in other professional sports because it can get teams good draft picks
