1. Do you believe that sports can help create unity in a community after a disaster/tragedy?
2. Do you think the Vegas shooting has had an effect on why the Golden Knights are successful this season?
3. Does the Golden Knights clinching the playoffs help promote unity within the city after the Vegas shootings?
ReplyDeleteYes I do think that sports can help create a unity in a community after a tragedy/disaster. People watch sports for fun and to do something that is less stress. When sports support their hometown and what that town went through creates a support group for people. I think that the Golden Knights are doing well because of their athleticism and how they are playing not because of the vegas shooting. The support from the shooting for the team could be helping the team emotionally, the players know that they have their community on their team and I think that is emotional support for the team. Yes, the team helps promotes unity within the city because it is bringing fans together and have common grounds to communicate. It isn’t really promoting but it is bringing together through the love of the sport.
I do believe that sports can help create unity after a tragedy because everyone rallies around their sports teams. Sports brings people together, and everyone can just enjoy sport for a couple of hours. During the games people are not only supporting the team, they are also there for each other. I think that the team was successful because they are a really good team, but I think the shooting definitely inspired them. Yes, I think that the team making the playoffs helps promote unity within the city. The city will really rally around the team, and everyone in the city will feel part of something. More and more people will go to the arena during the playoffs, and more people will be paying attention to them.

ReplyDeleteI do believe that sports can help create unity after a tragedy because people come together to watch games. Watching sports can make people forget about their problems for even just an hour of their lives. People sit down and chat about the game, not really anything outside of it. I think that the Vegas shooting had a positive effect on why the Golden Knights are successful this season. The support from their fans has made the team try even harder to do well this season. The shooting was a tragic event that turned into an inspiration for the players. The Golden Knights clinching the playoffs definitely helped promote unity within the city after the Vegas shooting. This has created a bridge within the city for many people, fans or not. Not only has the energy from the city increased, but also the energy within the stadium. Love for sport does not only need to be about a game, but it is also about coming together.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that sports can help create unity in a community after a disaster/tragedy because it brings fans from that community together. It helps people/fans get their mind off of these horrible tragedies by focusing on their favorite sports teams. I do think that the Vegas shooting has had a positive effect on the Golden Knights success this season because they have gained so much support from their fans which can only motivate them throughout the season. I think the Golden Knights clinching the playoffs helps promote unity amongst the city prior to the shooting because it makes fans come together and bond over their shared love of the sport/city.
ReplyDeleteI do indeed believe that sports can create unity within a community after a tragedy. Sports is one of the most talked about things within a community, and a good sports team can unite a community regardless of whether there is a tragedy or not. However, if there is a tragedy and a team is performing well it is that much more meaningful to see people come together. Often times people don't have a lot in common, however loving a hometown sports team can always unify them. Whether it's a regular season game in a bar on a Tuesday, or game seven of the world series, sports has and will always bring people together.
ReplyDeleteAs we have seen many times in the past, like the Boston Strong movement in 2013, the Astros run to the world series after city-destroying flooding or the Saints winning the Super Bowl in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, sports teams often find success after a tragedy within their sport. It might be stupid to think teams play better just because of a tragedy, but there is evidence to suggest that that statement is true. It's not that the players are any more motivated, or even any more talented, it's just that there is some sort of "destiny," that I believe can drive a storyline or a team to victory.
With the Vegas Golden Knights, it is a difficult situation to judge. Partially because Las Vegas is a city made up mostly of tourists, the residents being the workers, and also that most impacted by the shooting were indeed tourists not residents of Las Vegas. Also, the shooting took place over six months ago, not that it is forgotten, it is just that the residents no longer have it on the top of their mind, nor are in as much recovery from the tragedy. In most cases I would indeed agree that an underdog, surprising playoff run would unite a city, however in this particular case, I do not believe it to be a factor in unifying the city of Las Vegas.
I think sports play a key factor in unifying people after the occurrence of a tragedy or disaster. Sports are a way to bring different groups of people together for common enjoyment. Towns, cities, countries and different groups of people come and watch games and become a united front. The Golden Knights have been inspired by the vegas shooting. They have gained immense support from their community which has given them tons of support throughout the season. The Knights have brought people together through the love of their community and the love of the sport. The team promotes unity in the community by bringing fans and members of the community together. The spotlight is on the Knights as people around the country have taken notice in their success following the Vegas shooting last October.

ReplyDeleteI do believe that sports games can help unify a community and bring people together after a tragedy. It can help take their minds off what has just happened and keep in their heads that everyone is there for each other and supports one another. I think the vegas shooting helped bring people together and maybe some people who didn't even watch the golden knights but wanted to be a part of something to help them get through what happened.
ReplyDeleteSports has a great tendency to create a feeling of unity after horrific events take place. One of the most popular examples was in New York when Mike Piazza hit a home run after the events of 9/11/01. Events like this bring more cheerfulness to a community, even after traumatizing events like what happened then. I don’t feel that the Vegas Golden Knights performance, as a team, was dramatically affected by the tragic shooting, rather their management picked all players with high skill sets in the expansion draft. There is no question tragic events that have taken place in teams communities have feeded momentum to teams, with the most recent example being the Astros winning the World Series after Hurricane Harvey. Without a doubt, the players feel a need to perform to their maximum ability after such events, but you still need to have extreme skill in the first place to be this successful, especially in the inaugural season of a franchise. With how rare it is to be so good in the inaugural season of a franchise, let alone make it to the playoffs in the inaugural season, there is little doubt in my mind the Golden Knights will have a better chance at gaining unity with the city after such a tragic event. The city of Las Vegas is filled with many tourists year around, however, with the success of the Golden Knights in their first season, they have made tremendous ground on winning the people of Las Vegas.
ReplyDeleteYes, I do believe that sports can help unify a community after a tragety/disaster because not only does it bring people together, it also helps people take their minds off the issues. I believe that the reason why the Golden Knights are very successful this year is just because they're a good team, but I also believe that they are being inspired by the shooting to go beyond their limits. I believe that the team winning the playoffs helps promote unity within the city because it brings the people of the city together and brings its energy up to where it was before the shooting.
ReplyDeleteI believe sports have the ability to have a unifying factor in that it helps unite people from any spectrum. Whether it be a small community or globally, sports have the ability to reach far and beyond several boundaries and create bonds like nothing else. I think the creation of the Vegas Golden Knights was a great source of unification for the city of Las Vegas after the horrific tragedy they experienced. I think they worked to try to bring hope to a situation that was not looked on positively and, because of their success, they achieved that goal. I believe that all of the players on that team played with a certain chip on their shoulder and with a great purpose. Not only could that create a lot of pressure, but it could put a bad light on them if they are unsuccessful because it could be seen as a failed attempt to create unity. However, because they were successful, I believe they are looked upon positively. I also think that sports was one of the only outlets people could use to try and cooperate with the situation at hand at the time. I think clinching the playoffs helped strengthen that unity within the team and the city as a whole because it was seen as a successful form of unity.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely think sports have a unifying ability. They have an incredible ability to bring hope to places struck by tragedy by simply just playing a game and distracting fro harsh realities. We've seent his with post 9/11 basebal teams (mike piazza homeruns), the 2013 Boston Redsox (boston strong), and recently the 2017 Astros and 2018 Golden Knights. Sports teams dont necessarily fix the entire situation following tragedies, however they serve as powerful symbols of hope when they do well in their events.
ReplyDeletei don't think the Golden Knights success was a product of the tragedy that took place in Vegas, but i definitely believe that that tragedy helped motivate some players and help bring importance to their season. Their success represents new hope and inspiration for the city and no doubt brings happiness to fans throughout the area. Sports teams such as the Golden Knights have an amazing ability to bring good news to their cities struck by tragedy, and when done so they have an amazing healing ability as well.
I do believe that sports have the power to unify. After the 2013 Boston Bombing, when David Ortiz came on the mic before their game and gave his famous "This is our city" speech, it really shows the power that sports have in unification. You can really see fans, players, and whole cities come together through sporting events.
ReplyDeleteI don't see the Vegas shooting as part of the reasoning for the teams success in their inaugural season, but I do that them making the playoffs will help promote unity within the city after the tragic events.
I think that sports are able to unify people after a tragedy. Because sports have such a big stage and so many people view them, they can gather a wide audience to help support a devastating occurrence. The team from the city in which the action occurred can definitely help mend the wounds that were created too. I think it is important for these sports teams to do so because they can truly make a difference in their societies. I don't think the Vegas shooting helped the Knight succeed but I do think it helped build a motive for the players to help bring some good to the community after the shooting. I think that the team may have felt an obligation to try their hardest to give some light to the broken community. Cheering for a team, especially one that is doing well, definitely brings people together so I think the Knights making the playoffs did help mend and bond people.
ReplyDeleteI think sports can create unity. I also think that most sports are mostly mental, and when things like the loss vegas shooting happen it can motivate athletes to perform better than they usually do when they don't have something on there mind. I think after a tragedy, a bunch of people going to a sporting event shows that the people are not gonna let the tragedy effect them. I also think that the nights going so far helps the people get the tragedy off of there mind and gives them something to be proud of.

ReplyDeleteYes, I feel that sports can help create unity in a community after disaster or treaty. Sports in general along with sports teams can help cheer up and unite friends and family after suffering. I do not feel that the Vegas shooting has had an effect on the success in the Golden Knights season because I feel that the management and coaching along with their picks have made the team very solid.
ReplyDeleteI think that the clinching of the playoffs does help create unity in the community because it gives the people of Las Vegas something to revolve around.
Yes sports create a unity after disaster because at sports games theres such a community atmosphere at sporting events. A great example is after hurricane katrina new orleans was reinvigorated by the saints and city was alive again. I feel that the golden knights were successful because it gave them a sense of belief since the community was behind them after the shooting
ReplyDeleteI believe that sports can help create unity in a community after a disaster/tragedy, and the Golden Knights is just another example of it happening. Watching sports can definitely take peoples mind off of a major tragedy and help them recover from a traumatic experience. Just as Kevin said, this can be seen in past events likewhen David Ortiz had famous speech after the Boston bombing, bringing together the city of Boston. Even though the Vegas shooting was a major event during the season for the Golden Knights, I don't feel like it was the reason for them reaching the playoffs in the first season. I think they made the playoff due to the great players the players and the coaching. Making the playoffs is something that will in fact help promote unity within the city after the tragic events.
ReplyDelete1. Do you believe that sports can help create unity in a community after a disaster/tragedy?
ReplyDeleteyes, i feel like a prime example of that is when after hurricane careena the New Orleans Saints won the Superbowl as the whole world rallied around them.
2. Do you think the Vegas shooting has had an effect on why the Golden Knights are successful this season?
I don't think it had a direct effect, but mentally it could effect the players, by raising the stakes and giving them something to play for
3. Does the Golden Knights clinching the playoffs help promote unity within the city after the Vegas shootings?
I think it can, it kinda depends on if the city is rallying behind them, it could become there rallying cry.
ReplyDeleteIt is no doubt that prior to the Vegas shooting, everyone in Vegas was feeling
upset. By clinching the playoff in a fantastic game, the Vegas Golden Knights brought a sense of unity to Vegas. The team owner, Bill Foley said that “It was a disaster that night, it was a terrible massacre, we changed our initial opening night ceremonies, I thought we really connected with the town". With the help of cheering fans, the Knights were able to finish out the game strong. In many cases, Tragedy can be used as motivation. The Knights were trying as hard as they could just to brighten up the city of Vegas. Through the combination and the will to bring happiness back to Vegas, the knights definitely brought unity back to Vegas. The team effort from both the community and the Knights helped create a sense of unity.
I firmly believe sports can bring a community together after a disaster. We saw this after the Boston marathon when there was a kind of "rally" at the red sox game. They work as a good tool bringing people together because no matter who you are, if you are a fan then you already have a connection with the person next to you. Secondly, I do think the shooting had an affect on their season. This is because it gave them motive to work together and it also brought the fan base closer together. Lastly, I believe it does promote unity in the community. Now everyone has a reason to come together. And as people come together it may bring new light on the bad memories some may have and distract them from the terrible things that have happened in their community recently.
ReplyDeleteI definitely believe that sports has an undeniable ability to bring communities together after a disaster. No matter who you are, sports gives its community members an easy medium for them to connect on and join together. People who seemingly live in completely different circumstances or places can see another fan and have a feeling of togetherness in supporting the same team. I think that the Las Vegas Shooting stood as a powerful driving force for the team and motivator for them to do well so that their community would be able to recover and mend from the wounds that the shooting caused. The Golden Knights clinching the playoffs definitely helps in bringing unity to their town after the shooting. It gave community members a way to connect with one another as well as a distraction from the tragedy that recently occurred.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that sports can bring a community together. The Vegas Golden Knights' season is a notable example, after the tragedy of the Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting on the strip, that killed 59 and injured more than 400. I don't necessarily believe the success of the team was based on the tragedy, as the Golden Knights are only in their first season with relatively new fans. However, it can be seen as a motivation to bring a championship to their city, which can bring happiness. Another example happened with the Houston Astros, who won the 2017 World Series right after Hurricane Harvey that brought disaster to the city. Yet, after all that occurred, the people of Houston still cheered and celebrated when their hometown team was able to win their first championship. This is the power of sports, being an effective link of unity for a community.

ReplyDeleteI do think that sports can bring a community together. Sports can create unity because everyone loves sports.Everyone has a sport they love that they can always look to when times are rough. Often times teams tribute bad things that have happened in their community. The Orlando MLS team dedicated a section of their seats to the people that were kid in the Orlando night club shooting. They dedicated one seat to every person that died in the shooting.
