  1. I believe to prevent sexual assault against youth athletes in the future we should take more precaution about who is hired and let around these young athletes. This also means that we should carry out constant check ups on the athletes to make sure everything is going smoothly. In addition to this, we should also make athletes more comfortable reporting on this issue. If they become more comfortable talking about it then people will be more scared to sexually assault athletes. To answer the other question, I think if an athlete is sexually assaulted, especially by someone who trains them/see everyday, their performance is highly impacted. They are most likely constantly thinking about the horrible things this certain person did to them, taking their mind off what they should be thinking about. If we can eliminate this distraction I am certain there will be a noticable increase in their performance.

  2. I think that a lot of people don't understand how bad sexual assault is and how hard it is to prevent it. I think it makes people scared to live their life sometimes. I think to prevent it in sports, they should have supervisioin on all massage thereapists or any sort of therapist. I think sexual assault can affect how people perform in sports because it takes their mind off of what they are doing and they start thinking about how they have been assaulted. I also think they would be to scared to say anything because they think whoever they tell will just push it away, which is what usually happens. I think we have to take sexual assault more seriously and deal with it in a more routine way.

  3. Sexual assault has no place in sports, and there needs to be steps in order to prevent it from happening to youth athletes. I think that there needs to be a lot of focus on who is hired. There needs to be an strict guidelines in order for someone to get a job. Also, during the beginning of their tenure, players should be able to report to league officials of how the coach is doing. If there were any problems, it would immediately be reported to an official, who would then take action. It should be encouraged to speak out if you happen to be a victim of sexual assault. I think that sexual assault greatly impacts the performance of an athlete. Being a victim of sexual assault scars people forever. Many victims are never the same, and they are emotionally and mentally affected. This may lead to a lack of concentration and drive because all that will be on their mind is the horrible abuse that they were victim to. Especially if the abuser was a person who was around them a lot, they would always feel frightened. People cannot perform well when they are scared. If the issue of sexual assault was taken much more seriously, many athletes would not have to worry about being victimized. If they did not have to worry, they would see an increase in their performance.

  4. I agree with my classmates and their thoughts. There needs to be more education towards preventing sexual assault. Athletes should trust their doctors and have full faith that these doctors aren’t taking advantage of them. The people who hired Larry Nassar are the ones who opened the door for these girls to be taken advantage of. More education needs to be taught worldwide to everyone in our societies. The known question of “why are girls being taught how they can defend themselves from sexual predators but men aren’t being taught not to sexual assault” I know that women can sexual assault too, but the most common cases are men being the sexual assaulter. Sexual assault impacts a person’s mind and their abilities to continue with life. These 200 women have been keeping a secret and burden on their shoulders that about someone who violated their bodies. These olympics or highly competitive athletes have enough pressure and thoughts on their minds and for someone, who was suppose to help and aid the athlete, to come in and destroy their brains by taking advantage of them. Athletes lose all trust in people and this doctor just added a lifetime of hardship on these athletes.

  5. I believe in the society we live in today, sexual harassment is a prevalent issue, with several more people speaking out about their personal experiences and with lots of situations. I believe people have the right to speak out, even in incredibly minor situations, to let their voices be heard. The twisted and uncomfortable situation with Larry Nassar's case is a prime example of sexual harassment in the sports world today. However, people did not start speaking out about the situation until recently. There should be steps in order to help stop the continuation of sexual harassment in any situation, including recognition from others and people not being afraid to speak out. They have the freedom to let their voice be heard, so if something is done that is invasive of their or another person's privacy, they should speak up and let it be known so that action can be taken on the persecutor. Sexual harassment takes a toll on not only the performance of an athlete, but their entire lives as well. The factors of worrying as well as mental and physical damage affects performance in drastic ways. These actions need to be enforced upon and stopped as often as possible so that athletes do not have to worry or feel violated in any manner.

  6. In order to prevent sexual assault against young athletes in the future, I feel like there should be more than one person in charge, and someone constantly checking in with the athlete. that being said, there should also be security cameras just incase the athlete might not feel comfortable coming forward. this is a very complicated issue that it hard to manage, and chose the right way to go about it. There also needs to be more attention paid to who is hired. if they have a good background, great. But the search shouldn't stop there. There should be thorough digging into the person being hired to make sure they are not a predator, so something like this does not happen again. I think sexual assault would make someone want to stop coming to their sport that they love and that is their life, but the affects of sexual assault can be life - lasting, and will ruin ones experience with the sport.

  7. It is very difficult to prevent child molestation. In many instances like the gymnastics doctor, it can be extremely hard to identify if a hired worker is a pedophile or child molestor. However, there are several things a team or organization can do to prevent a suspected predator. Personally, i think that the best way to prevent child molestation is to implement a more rigorous hiring process for these workers. Another way to prevent child molestation from occurring is by having better team communication. A trusted team counselor would be a very effective way in allowing athletes to talk about the stresses of their daily life and confide in someone if they are mistreated. Thirdly, having supervision by multiple adults could be effective in preventing child abuse.
It is definitely possible for a victim who is dealing with sexual abuse to have their performance altered. In the article, some of the athletes who were abused by Nassar, ended up turning into olympians. So, I think that being abused might play more of a role in their daily lives. Some of the things that may occur from sexual abuse can be social anxiety or trust issues. I think that an athlete who is dealing with sexual assault might have more of an issue with socializing, rather than sport performance.

  8. I think that to prevent sexual assault in sports, personnel should be monitored more closely when they are in a position of power where they can sexual assault someone. For instance with Nassar, he was in a position of power over the girls. In some cases some of the girls were so young that they didn't know that they were being sexually assaulted. If the personnel who can get into these positions of power are more closely monitored it will be difficult for such an event to occur again. Regarding how sexual assault affects sports I think that it greatly does. It would be almost impossible to go through such a situation and not be affected. All the time that they are training and competing the fact that they are being/had been sexually assaulted would weigh on their mind heavily, in turn making them perform worse.

  9. I think in order to prevent sexual assault against youth athletes in the future, an education on what sexual assault is needs toe enforced amongst young professional athletes. I think athletes need to be able to recognize what is considered sexual assault and be able to defend themselves if they're ever involved in an encounter. Obviously the coaches, etc. should work on hiring doctors who the athletes feel comfortable with, but any nice guy or girl can act out at anytime no matter how much you trust them, so I think the athletes should be educated on the topic. I think sexual assault can really impact athletes performance because something so serious can really do damage to people especially young athletes. A situation like this can create a bad connotation of the sport to the athletes and give them PTSD, etc. So, I think it's essential that we prevent any sort of sexual assault to ever happen to athletes.

  10. Unfortunately, I believe we have raised an issue without an answer that is cut and dry. The process of vetting doctors and team physicians is not an answer to the problem at hand. If there is any sniff of evidence of sexual misconduct nowadays, these job hopefuls are basically eliminated from the pool of applicants. The deeper problem lies within communicating with our athletes, and making sure when an issue occurs, we know about it, immediately. It was said in the article that Nassar abused "nearly 200 girls and women," however we are just now hearing the uproar in response to the acts he's committed. It's easy to blame all the problems on the savage who partook in these disgusting acts, however I believe much of the blame also belongs to the savages who went to great lengths to cover it up. USA Gymnastics, Michigan State University and the US Olympic Committee all heard the allegations against Nassar, but disregarded them because he was "widely respected in the gymnastics community," and that it would be easier not to create a problem. This is the main issue, the fact that for years it drags on until one act of misconduct becomes hundreds. So what solution do I propose? Well, as I previously stated it centers around communication. There should be rules set in place that when an athlete, male or female files a sexual assault allegation, it be filed, noted, and immediately looked into as a criminal offense. Another helpful step that I could see helping prevent sexual assault in youth sports in the future is the addition of a weekly or monthly session of therapy for athletes to voice there complaints or applause of certain things going in their lives relating to sports. This can cover anything from injuries, to relationships with teammates, to the topic at hand, sexual misconduct. I believe if implemented properly, these stories will come out and no longer be swept under the rug like we have disgustingly seen in the past.
Beyond sports, sexual assault can ruin one's psyche and confidence in a real life setting. Imagine what it could do within a sport, especially if the assault has come as a result of participating in said sport. I can't even imagine this, stepping up to the plate in the ninth inning of a close game, with your confidence struck. Releasing a three point shot down two in the fourth quarter without your game face on. This would be devastating. When these athletes aren't 100% invested in what they are doing in the moment, when they have that minor or major deflation in confidence, it is likely that there performance is crippled.

  11. - What should be done to prevent sexual assault against youth athletes in the future? I feel that nothing can be done to stop attempts at sexual assault towards young athletes, but efforts can be made to try to prevent these sexual predators from acting again. I feel that athletes seeing a doctor for an injury they have obtained should be accompanied by a parent or guardian during any medical examinations or check ups. I feel that the adult or guardian being present along with the athlete will make sure the doctor or coach does nothing to the athlete that makes them feel uncomfortable in any way shape or form. I also feel that background checks should be made a priority when hiring new staff for an athletes team making sure the new member has had no prior history with sexual assault.
    - How do you think sexual assault impacts the ability to preform ones sport? I feel that if an athlete is sexually assaulted it would dramatically impact their performance in a negative way. The athlete could be scared, nervous or just stressed that if they got an injury of some kind or did anything wrong, they could be sexually assaulted. No athlete or human should ever have the fear of being afraid of someone who could potentially sexual assault them especially while playing the sports that they love most.

  12. There is no real solution in our world that can prevent 100 percent of sexual assault from happening. There will always be messed up people in our world, which includes certain individuals who look to take advantage of children. Larry Nassar, who was notorious for horrendous acts on young gymnasts, claimed he was using a certain treatment to solve their injury. Some women stepped forward questioning what he was doing to conduct treatment, however there was immediate resistance met by whoever they approached. Officials inside the athletic department at Michigan State University, and USA gymnastics assured all people questioning his treatment techniques that he is trusted, and that he is greatly experienced on the matter. Without a shadow of doubt, there should be immediate investigating into this matter. After making the very hard decision of reporting your own trainer, you should not be met with resistance, but assurance that there will be a investigation on the matter. In future cases like this, there should not be resistance against anybody who reports a certain individual. They should treat each situation as an investigation and figure out what the problem is. There should not be deflection the immediate second somebody approaches administrators about a issue, but encouragement that their problem will be looked into.
Worry is what can go into somebody’s head when performing the sport your thrive at. Worry, when you’re forced to think about sexual assault hanging over your head. Having this hang over your head is only going to handicap what you will want to accomplish during a sports event. In big game situations, having that dreaded thought in your brain can ruin what you can potentially accomplish in game. Whether it’s a game winning shot in basketball, bases loaded 2 outs in the world series, or any other situation, having this topic swirling around your head will only contribute negatively towards your success.

  13. I believe in order to prevent sexual assault against youth athletes in the future, there is one major change that has to be made. If any coach is told about the possibility of an athlete being sexual assaulted they must not take that information lightly. As seen with Nassar's case, a number of his victims said they complained to coaches, trainers or even police, but their concerns were brushed aside. Because the victims complaints were taken too lightly, Nassar was able to assault even more young athletes.
I also think being a victim of sexual assault definitely impacts ones ability to perform in any sports. Having this major event happen to you will take a toll on your psyche, negatively effect your abilities in sports.

  14. Sexual assault should never be categorized with sports in anyway and I think there are many different ways to not allow something like this to ever happen again going into the future. I think younger athletes should always have a parent or guardian with when seeing any medical professional. Having an adult there will make the younger athlete more comfortable. I also think a background check should be required when hiring a medical professional for a job like this because young athletes like these should be getting the best medical attention as possible and they should feel comfortable when with the medical professional.
I think for many of the athletes that have been sexually assaulted, it impacts their performance because It can be scarring for an individual and could negatively affect them while in a game. I think by being sexually assaulted it can be a distraction for the person while they're mid game. I also think it can potentially make the athlete weaker emotionally and physically.

  16. I believe education and instituting stricter policies should be encouraged to prevent sexual assault on young athletes. With cases such as Larry Nassar, former USA Gymnastics national team doctor, and Jerry Sandusky, former Penn State defensive coordinator, both men abused their power as leaders in sport. They took it upon themselves to destroy the lives of young athletes who gave them trust and loyalty. In addition, these cases involved very much a lack of supervision and acknowledgement when a complaint was voiced. The only solution to this issue is through awareness in young athletes, extra supervision regardless of how safe a situation is, and to hear out all possible grievances. These questions can be linked to sexual assault as a whole, not just sports. But in this case, the athletes themselves should be given all opportunities to make their voices heard, to which USA Gymnastics completely ignored for over 25 years. Careers are impacted, and lives are ruined.

  17. I think in today's world a very clear line must be drawn to what is and what is not sexual assault, and everyone must be made aware of this discrepancy. I think a lot of people automatically give certain individuals credibility and give them their trust due to their credentials (as mentioned how many people didn't think too much of what Nassar was doing because of how well regarded he was). However, i dont this should be the case. Everyone needs to be aware of what falls under the category of sexual assault in order to be able to recognize when it is taking place despite the offender is. Additionally, I think in sports especially with athletes as aware of their bodies as anyone, coaches, management and other involved staff need to put the safety of their athletes above any reputation of [doctors] or team accomplishments.

I think sexual assault affects people far beyond just their sport. I think mentally it can be one of the most challenging things for someone to go through since it is such a difficult topic to share with others, hence the reason why we see it take so long for victims to finally talk about their experiences. For athletes in particular, being mentally fit for the sports the play is just as important as the physical aspect, and if there are any distractions from sexual assault (i.e. feeling uncomfortable) it can certainly affect their performance--not always, as we have seen many of the gymnasts Nassar had worked with to go on and achieve great success, but behind the scenes the effect can be even greater.

  18. Unfortunately, sexual assault is a huge problem in our world today. This includes both Larry Nassar.Nassar, being in a high position, abused his power greatly. I think that we need to do a better job educating our society on what sexual assault is and let them know what they can do if someone tries to assault them. Also we need to help people feel comfortable to come out about being assaulted. I also believe that being a victim of sexual assault would greatly impact performance on the field. If someone has been affected by sexual assault, their mind will not be on making a basket, or landing their routine. Also, being it is very tough for someone to come out and talk about being assaulted, their mind will definitly not be on sports.

  19. I think that sexual assault does play a big part of athletes ability to preform in sport and honestly there is not really a way around it. Sexual assault does not only affect athletes. It affects anyone who encounters it and the best way to stay clear of it is just to be safer. If an athletes mind is not it the right place during a game they have little chance of playing up to the standard they normally play at. It is hard for people to come out to the public after having an encounter with sexual assault which makes it even harder to be in the right mindset before a sports event. Having never encountered any type of sexual assault I can't speak on behalf of experience but I can say that I feel for all the people that have encountered it

  20. Sexual assault is an outstanding issue that is unfortunately hard to stop. Most sexual assault cases like this story occur for years. Athletes are put through traumatic experiences, sometimes for years. In most cases, the assault occurs for years or extended amounts of time without anyone knowing except for the athletes and the perpetrator. Nassar abused his power by taking advantages of hundreds of girls. He could have been stopped as gymnasts have come out and other men and women in power knew of the misconduct. It is probably very difficult for athletes to perform after going through a sexual assault. It is one of the most mentally challenging things for any person to go through. Being mentally there during sports is the most important things for athletes. If their mind is somewhere else then it is hard for them to focus on what is going on in the game.

  21. - What should be done to prevent sexual assault against youth athletes in the future?
I think that they need to have more people around, including parents whenever anyone is touching their child. I think that maybe adding cameras to these rooms or some other way to be able to see what the doctors are doing. I think along with that parents and coaches along with anyone else needs to be taken seriously when they feel uncomfortable. I think that anyone who touches a child should be burned at the stake, I think if we imposed the death penalty for these people it might make them think twice and help to protect young players more.
    - How do you think sexual assault impacts the ability to preform ones sport?
I think sexual assault doesn't necessarily affect the physical aspect of playing but mentally it could cripple athletes.

  22. - What should be done to prevent sexual assault against youth athletes in the future? I believe, to prevent sexual assault, you have to get coaches that are the same gender as the majority of of the team. With this being said, there's no way to stop 100% of sexual assaults, but if we take this action it will be a big step forward for protecting those being assaluted.
    - How do you think sexual assault impacts the ability to preform ones sport? It definitely makes them more nervous and shaken, because they're now scared of their own coach.

  23. Sexual assault is a big issue not only in sports but all around the world. Preventing these encounters has proved a big challenge proved by the sandusky case and the Nassar case. To prevent these issues schools and sports organizations should do a deep backround check into everyone of their employees. I know this seems extensive but it might be the only way into finding these sexual abusers. With athletes it has a profound effect on them for multiple reasons. After a person is sexually assaulted confusion starts to set in whether to speak out or not. Since athletes are a huge part of the fabric of mainstream media speaking out may cause a lot of unwanted media attention. This eventually could lead to a dip in form in the athletes particular sport considered they are distracted by off the field activities.
